My Résumé

Experience

June 2017 - Present

Watchdog Reporter

The Marion Star | Marion, Ohio

I primarily cover local government, the courts and breaking news for this daily newspaper. Among the major news stories I have covered are the opioid epidemic's impact on this central Ohio town, the Ohio State Fair ride accident and a human trafficking case in which eight Guatemalan teenagers were forced to work on Marion-area egg farms.

July 2016 - May 2017

Freelance Reporter

Columbus, Ohio

Based out of Columbus, Ohio, I covered breaking news stories for The Daily Beast, including the terror-inspired attack on Ohio State's campus in November 2016.

June 2014 - December 2015

Crime and Courts Reporter

Grand Forks Herald | Grand Forks, N.D.

I reported on crime, policing, the courts and corrections in Minnesota and North Dakota. I increased coverage of the county jail as part of a year-long fellowship with CUNY John Jay College of Criminal Justice. I stayed on top of my beat by scouring police dispatch logs, police reports, jail intake logs and court filings. My familiarity with open records laws often put my reporting above the rest, allowing me to find information or sources no other news outlet had. I supported my reporting with research from peer-reviewed journals, databases such as PACER and LexisNexis and news archives. Social media played a critical role in my reporting, particularly in identifying and reaching out to potential sources and connecting with readers.

January - May 2014

Contributor

WOUB Public Media | Athens, Ohio

I shot, edited and scripted video packages about campus news, using HMC-80 cameras and Final Cut Pro editing software. I also recorded audio for radio stories and mixed the sound, including a story about the man and the laser technology behind LASIK eye surgery.

August - December 2013

Contributor

Global Spotlight | Athens, Ohio

I wrote about Guatemalan news for this online, international affairs magazine. I interviewed Guatemala-based sources in Spanish about issues such as adoption backlogs and adolescent pregnancy. I conducted research on Spanish-language websites.

June - August 2013

News Reporting Intern

Cincinnati Enquirer | Cincinnati, Ohio

I reported on government, breaking news and other topics, including local efforts to save a historic building slated for demolition, a story which notched the most views on its day of publication. I used public records to inform my reporting, for instance, bolstering the piece about the historic building with city property maintenance code enforcement records, city council documents and county property records. I also contributed to the Enquirer's politics blog and contributed research to the Enquirer's profiles on candidates running for public office that fall.
